Deerhounds: Ralph Lauren’s Dog of Choice for Fall 2011 Brookfield Home Décor Collection

Deerhounds have become the latest accessory for Fall 2011.

That’s right; the ginormous Dog is one hip Sighthound.

Maybe Foxcliffe Hickory Wind had something to do with the trend.  You remember Hickory, right?

She was crowned the Top Dog at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in February.

The Scottish Deerhound was the first of its breed to be awarded Best In Show.

Today you’ll find the Deerhound lounging around at home…a 56-acrea horse farm in Virginia.

Maybe that’s where Ralph Lauren picked up his inspiration for the Brookfield Collection making its debut this season.

Ralph Lauren has officially made Deerhounds Interior Design Hounds.

Even before Hickory dreamed of winning the Best of Show at Westminster, Ralph Lauren considered the Dog breed worthy of Fashion Hounds.

The pair of Ralph Lauren Fashion Hounds below are from 17 years ago!

As the leader of the pack, Ralph Lauren sets trends each year, but his classic horse & Hound look will never go out of style. (Those Fashion Hounds don’t look so bad considering their age, do they?)

Horses & Hounds have always held a place of honor in the Ralph Lauren design stable.

He pairs them up with tartans, tweeds and paisleys for an instant to-the-manor-born equestrian style.

Fashion Hounds & Interior Design Hounds love the look…and where there are horses, you’ll always find Dogs.

Key design elements to create the look:

In his latest collection, Ralph Lauren has updated the color palette of the classic equestrian look with rich plums & clarets coordinated with woodsy olive, cypress & lichen greens.

While most of us don’t live on a thoroughbred estate, the casually elegant look holds up to today’s busy lifestyles.

Sturdy fabrics, distressed finishes and layers of patterns are not only Pet friendly; they can hide a multitude of sins.  And comfort & style never go out of fashion.

Dog antiques & Canine inspired accessories are perfect to pair up with an old-world, equestrian style décor.

Pedigree is not as important as the look, so if Ralph Lauren is not in your budget you can create the look with flea market finds.

How do you think Ralph Lauren gets all of those antiques for his stores?  (I’ve bumped into several of their buyers at shows!)

While some fabric can be quite costly, if you’re in love with the look, consider creating a pillow with the material rather than re-upholstering an entire sofa.

Still too costly?  Use the expensive fabric for the face of the pillow and finish the back of the pillow in a less costly fabric.

Interior Design Hound’s will appreciate the dinnerware designed for the Brookfield Collection.

Bands of Ralph Lauren’s Ashburton Plaid encircle the scalloped rims of the dinnerware along with shimmering metalic accents.

While designer Ralph Lauren may change his color direction each year, and his Dogs du jour change with the seasons; you can always count on the designer to have a version of the classic equestrian style in his home collection.

If you’re looking for plaid accessories for your Dog, however, you’ll have to check out Hamish McBeth.  They created the Scottie Dog Highland Bling Dog Collar in the photo above.

Later, I’ve got to let the Dog out,

New York Fashion Hounds

Everyone is strutting their stuff in the Big Apple this week.

New York’s Madison Square Garden is hosting the Westminster Kennel Club Show  while Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week  is glamming it up at the Lincoln Center.

The events have more in common than you can imagine.

First, there’s lots of primping going on behind the scenes before the pedigreed pooches headed for the show ring.

Of course, the media moguls scurry about trying to sniff out the latest trends.

If you run into one, let them know they might want to check out the Dog park….

…because the Fashion Industry has unleashed the Dogs.

Yes, paw-prints are leaving their marks on Fashion Design & Haute Couture.

Take these decidedly avant-garde sandals from fashion designer Reed Krakoff’s collection:

Reed Krakoff Badger Ankle Sandal.jpg

Krakoff, the former creative director of Coach, used boar hair on both the shoes & cuff bracelets in his collection this season.

According to Reed Krakoff, he found his inspiration from “Dog collars made by the hair during Victorian times.”

“I liked the idea that it was kind of aggressive but kind of subversive, but at the same time it was quite luxurious,” noted Krakoff.

The boar (or badger) hair Dog Collar actually served a purpose.  The hair tickled the French Bulldogs’ ears and made them stand up.

Which brings me to Marcel, the French Bulldog.

French Bulldog Marcel Nars

Marcel was the face of Nars Cosmetics line of Pro-Prime skin-smoothing face products.

Seriously.   A Dog…for anti-aging skin care products.

Francois Nars, founder of the fashionable Nars Cosmetic line, thought using his French Bulldog was a natural.  Note Marcel’s stylish Dog collar.

Tommy Hilfiger’s Hounds, featured in his current preppy ad campaigns have made Bassets downright chic.

The Hilfiger Hound’s, named Morgan V and Morgan IV, have that upper-crust-I’m-so-above-it-all disinterested gaze that actually takes years of practice to achieve.

Of course, Ralph’s been doing the Dog thing forever.

It seems that many Fashion Hounds are Y I K E S for Spikes!

And we all know where they got that idea…

Spike Dog Collars have been around since the Middle Ages to protect Dogs from attacks.  It seems prey instinctively know to go for the jugular.

The Fashion Biz can be ferocious too, with the gazillions of dollars up for grabs.  Fashion is the second-largest industry in New York!

I can see a ferocious two-pound Chihuahua in this little pink number:

Colors change with the seasons,

…but Fashion Hounds seem to always know the hue of the moment.

Do Pet styles follow fashion or has fashion gone to the Dogs?

It seems like the whims of Fashion have been changing since…well, the Pyramids.

Which brings me to Valentino’s fascination this season with the pyramid stud.

They’re sprinkled liberally throughout Valentino’s current collection on both footwear & handbags.

Fashion designer Valentino Garavani, an owner of five Pugs, exclaimed during a scene in the movie Valentino: The Last Emperor:

“I don’t care about the collection.

My Dogs are much more important.”

I’d say Valentino is true Fashion Hound.
