This week I catch up with the talented, Dog-loving Interior Designer Susan Jamieson for a colorful interview that you won’t want to miss on Decorating Tails, the Pet Friendly Radio Podcast on Pet Life Radio.

I hope you’ll tune in to join us!

Just how much of a Dog lover is the globe-trotting Interior Designer and founder of Bridget Beari Designs?  I’ll let you decide…but here are some clues:

  •  Susan’s Interior Design Firm is named after two Dogs:  “Bridget & Beari.”

  •  In Susan’s new paint collection, Bridget Beari Colors, you’ll notice more than a few colors inspired by her four-legged friends.  One of my favorite colors is “Wagging White.”

  •  Along with fabric samples and floorplans, you’re sure to find a few Design Animals running around her studio in Richmond, Virginia.

I’d have to say that qualifies Susan as a full-fledged Interior Design Hound!

Awarded Richmond, Virginia’s Top Dog of Interior Design by R Home Magazine, Susan is as full of Southern charm as her interiors…

As an Interior Designer, Susan believes in re-using furniture and family pieces rather than starting from scratch.  Isn’t that refreshing?

Susan also practices what she preaches.  Her Grandmother’s sofa above was given a modern makeover to fit her modern lifestyle.

If you recognize the picture, you might have seen it Traditional Home. The magazine featured Susan Jamieson’s home & Bridget Beari Designs in one of its issues.

While the Interior Designer is all about modern conveniences….

Susan is comfortable working in any style from ultra-contemporary to traditional.

The design goal for Bridget Beari Designs is to create spaces that are beautiful, livable and functional for everyone who lives in them.

That includes the four-legged members of the family!

That’s why I’m such a fan.

Susan’s well-planned & stylish interiors always have loads of storage space worked into her floorplans.  Like me, she likes to take advantage of every square inch of floor space.

While some designers follow trends and show more concern for “looks” than function, that’s never the case with Susan.

Whether creating a design for a living room in Virginia, an apartment in Palm Beach or a vacation home in a far-flung locale like Costa Rica,  Susan and her team at Bridget Beari Designs are up to the task.

Known for her keen sense of color, Susan has just finished creating the Bridget Beari Colors paint collection.

Developed with Fine Paints of Europe, the quality is unsurpassed.  If the paint is good enough for George Washington’s home, Mount Vernon, just imagine how good your home will look!

Design Tip # 521:

There is nothing more expensive than cheap paint!

Susan Jamieson tackled her paint collection with the same level of enthusiasm & detail that she gives every project.

20+ years of design experience, careful study, a strong sense of style and a BIG dollop of whimsy went into developing the 76 colors in the Bridget Beari Colors line of paint.

Is whimsy a necessary ingredient for paint?

If you’re Susan Jamieson it certainly is!

Why have “white” when you can have Wagging White?  Why, indeed.  Susan named all 76 colors after Pets.

The Pet names came from Dogs, cats, and even horses of clients, friends & family.  Of course Lulabelle, Susan’s Shar-Pei, got her paw into the act. The Dog is quite the Interior Design Hound, you know.

Designing DOGS & Animal Blueprints: Decorating Tails Radio Podcast

This week Robert Redding joins me to discuss the “Designing” of Dogs on Decorating Tails, the Pet Friendly Radio Podcast on Pet Life Radio.

I hope you’ll tune in to join us!

Don’t worry, were not talking about cloning, DNA or designing a Pugadoodle…

Robert Redding is the founder of the Animal Blueprint Company, where his original drawings of Dogs are turned into retro-inspired architectural blueprints!

The Animal Blueprints have been a hit with both Dog lovers & Interior Design Hounds who have been using Robert’s artwork to add a special Canine accent to their homes & projects across the Country.

Measuring in at 18” x  24” matted, the Dog prints are perfect for hanging in pairs or a mass grouping for maximum Canine style and impact.

You could say that Robert Redding is a creative trifecta, because he is a Design Hound, an Artistic Hound and a Fashion Hound!

After designing sportswear & accessories for a major surfing lifestyle brand, the Dog lover rediscovered architectural blueprints while working on his own home’s major remodel.

Inspired by his childhood memories of his Father’s rolled-up, blue drawings, Robert decided to create a “Blueprint” of his Dog.

And the rest, as they say, is history…

The artist, graphic designer and architect was able to combine his passions with his love of Dogs and create the Animal Blueprint Company.

Charles Eames said:

“The details are not the details.

They make the design.”

Take a close look at the Animal Blueprints, because Robert has filled each one with amazing design details!

The focal point of each Animal Blueprint is a line art drawing of a Dog in side view…or as we say in the design business: the side elevation.

Just as you’d find on a building’s floorplan, the Dog in the blueprint is dimensioned!

Anyone who has worked with building documents or CAD drawings will recognize the “construction details & construction notes” included on the drawing.

The Detail portion of the Animal Blueprint gave Robert the opportunity to feature the Dog’s portrait, while the “Construction Notes” section features facts about the specific Dog breed.

Information includes:

  • Name of the Dog Breed
  • Dog Breed’s Origins
  • History of the Breed
  • Size Range for the Dog
  • Description of the Dog’s Coat
  • Dog’s Coloring & Unique Markings
  • Temperament of the Dog Breed

DOGS Interior Design Construction Notes

Of course every home’s construction or remodeling plans require an Architect’s seal of approval, and Dog Blueprints are no exception…

You just need a Canine Architect.

I. M. Paws Pei CANINE Architect

 Canine Architect   I.  M.  P A W S

Undoubtedly, “I.M. Paws” is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the Master of Modern Architecture: I. M. Pei.

The world renowned American Architect designed the glass-and-steel pyramid of the Louvre in Paris, the National Gallery of Art East Building in Washington, DC and the John F. Kennedy Library (Just a few of his works.)

You can find more information on I.M. Pei here.

The design of the Dog Blueprints is decidedly retro, but they are a great addition to any style of décor.

With the distressed finish and soft indigo color of the artwork, they’re reminiscent of mid-century architectural blueprints.

Robert’s busy creating his Dogs renderings in his San Juan Capistrano, California studio with his rescue Dogs at his side.

Currently there are over 86 Dog breeds available in the Animal Blueprint Company lineup…

 Dachshunds, Spaniels & English Setters

Robert’s goal is to represent every one of the 161 Dog breeds sanctioned by the American Kennel Club.  I think he’ll be busy for quite some time.

Robert’s Animal Blueprint Company is NOT just for pedigreed Pooches.

As a rescue Dog owner, it was important to the artist to create a series of American Mutts.  A portion of each sale is donated to Canine Shelters to aid the care and adoption of homeless Pets.

Once again Robert’s sense of humor is evident when you read the American Mutt’s “construction notes.”

Among other traits, the Dog is “Guaranteed to Shed.”

The History of the Dog listed in the “construction notes” claims:  “Mother may have been a bit of a lady, father a bit of a tramp.”

Custom Dog Blueprints are also available…
