Dogs & Home Décor: A Frenzy of Whimsy by MacKenzie-Childs

Are you familiar with MacKenzie-Childs?

The artisan line of patterned home décor, gifts & furnishings has been around for over 25 years.

They’ve always had a spot in their collection for Pets.

While the company has changed hands several times over the years, MacKenzie-Childs has passionate collectors that adore their signature look.

Checks, stripes & whimsical patterns cover everything from dinnerware to Dog Beds & Dog Collars.

MacKenzie-Childs Dog Beds can range from the sublime….

…to the ridiculous!  (With a very posh price tag.)

It will take several thousand dollars to purchase this Posh Pet Palace with its faux-tortoise shell finish.

Standing over four feet high with “hand-painted pastoral scenes of the countryside” surrounding the MacKenzie-Childs studio in Aurora, New York, any Mutt would feel regal taking a snooze inside this Puppy.

Maybe that’s why Neiman Marcus has been such a good customer of MacKenzie-Childs over the years?

The Courtly Check Pet Bowls are a little more down to earth…

Black & white checks have been the foundation for the MacKenzie-Childs look and work well with any style of decorating.

You may have noticed the colorful Dog sweaters the Miniature Pinschers in the Posh Pet Palace were wearing…

Mixing patterns & bright spots of color with black & white checks or stripes for contrast is another one of MacKenzie-Childs favorite styles.

Bold poppy pillows, vintage florals and cabbage roses often do the trick…

The fanciful botanicals of the Flower Market Collection are a perfect contrast to the courtly checks with their lush garden hues.

I love the vintage look of the Dog bowls, available in two sizes & colors…

MacKenzie-Childs’ Flower Market Collection covers everything from Doggie Dinnerware to Pet Frames:

There’s plenty of fanciful furniture in the MacKenzie-Childs lineup that would make any little girl’s room a dream.

(Although I’ve known a few interesting characters that have filled their entire homes with the line!)

If you’re into DIY, you might be inspired to paint a few flea market finds yourself.

I did notice a “Pagoda Bookshelf & Console” in the MacKenzie-Childs collection that certainly looked familiar…

Dorothy Draper MacKenzie-Childs Kindel Curio Console

While the legs on the console are a different style, there is no mistake in my mind that its inspiration was taken from Dorothry Draper.

Well, not Dorothy Draper exactly…her “updated” line from Kindel Furniture: the Console & Curio from the Dorothy Draper Collection.

It could be said that Dorothy Draper was the decorator that put black & white checks on the map, not to mention black & white stripes.

Color was Dorothy Tuckerman Draper’s middle name.  The decorator was also a fan of roses.  The BIGGER rose the better in her design play book.

In the Interior Design Hound’s book, a little wild pattern & bold color goes a  l o n g  way.

Taffy, however wants it all.

Especially the Scottie Dog Christmas Ornament.  She remided me there are only 80 days until Christmas.  YIKES!

Later, I’ve got to take the Dog out,

Collectors will be out in force this weekend when MacKenzie-Childs will host its annual Fall Festival at their fanciful studio in Aurora, New York.  The working studio, once home to a dairy farm, is located on their 65-acres of beautiful grounds overlooking the Cayuga Lake.

The soft, neutral color palette combined with the simple, clean lines of the cabinetry & fixtures is fresh, modern & elegant.

Walls are painted in Benjamin Moore’s Ashley Grey and the trim is painted in China White.

Plain & Fancy’s breakfront is anything but traditional with contemporary hardware accents and clean lines.

Black & white photographs of the family Pets are elevated to artwork when matted and framed on the kitchen walls.

At the end of the massive, kitchen island created from carrara marble the designer installed a table for dining or homework projects.

Tufted side chairs, designed by Barbara Barry for Henredon, are upholstered in Pet Friendly leather that easily wipes clean.

My favorite feature in the kitchen is the Dog faucet.

Installed above the marble Pet Feeder, the Dog faucet creates a nifty Dog Bar and saves time & steps when filling the Dog’s water bowl…

The Pet feeder was custom made to coordinate with the kitchen countertop’s finish: carrara marble.

A less expensive option would be the marble Dog bowls available from Snooty Pets.  They’re offered in both a sleek square style and a classic round silhouette.

I say:  forget the pot-filler faucets above the kitchen cooktop…

That’s sooooooo yesterday.

Taffy & I will take the Dog faucet!

Later, I’ve got to let the Dog out,

Can’t make it to Chicago?
